An unforgettable experience at Lake Garda

The Lake Garda region in northern Italy is one of the most beautiful and convenient destinations for a trip, and it is a popular spot for tourists from all over the world. On one hand, the lake is surrounded by charming small towns; on the other, major cities like Venice, Verona, and Bologna are within easy driving distance. This proximity also makes the region easily accessible by air; rather than being limited to a single airport, there are several options including Milan, which, while relatively far for a day trip, serves as an excellent arrival point.
The region has an advanced and well-organized road network, making travel easy and providing convenient access to a wide range of sites and attractions. The roads are wide and well-maintained, and numerous toll roads offer a comfortable and safe driving experience. The cost of the tolls is certainly justified, especially considering the convenience and speed with which one can travel from place to place. Well-equipped rest stops are located along the routes, offering a chance to refresh, enjoy a coffee or a snack, and take in the spectacular views of the lake and surrounding mountains.

Limone
Peschiera del Garda
Peschiera del Garda proved to be the perfect base for exploring the region. Situated on the shores of Lake Garda, this charming town offers visitors a unique blend of nature, culture, and cuisine. Along the lake, one finds spectacular views of mountains and forests, providing a perfect backdrop for any outdoor activity.
The town itself is beautiful, situated right on the lake and featuring stunning turquoise-green canals that enhance the location's calm, magical atmosphere. These canals lend the town a sense of tranquility and peace, inviting visitors to stroll through its picturesque alleyways. A variety of cafés and restaurants offer unique local dishes, ensuring there is something to suit every taste. Additionally, free parking is available, making it convenient for visitors arriving by car.
Another advantage is the town's location right off the A4 highway, providing quick access to nearby destinations such as Verona, Bolzano, and other cities in the region. This highway allows for a comfortable drive with minimal traffic congestion, making it easy to plan day trips. This is a significant benefit for families or groups of friends looking to make the most of their time.
We chose to stay in a small apartment hotel right on the canal; it was a delight to wake up to that view every morning.
La Plume Restaurant
An excellent Italian restaurant; during the day, there is a beautiful view of the lake, and the pasta with burrata is superb.
Lake Tenno
Lake Tenno is located north of Lake Garda, near the town of Riva del Garda. It is a beautiful lake with stunning water color, and it features a circular trail that allows you to walk around it with relative ease.
Riva del Garda
Riva del Garda, a charming and delightful town at the northern end of the lake, is the town furthest away from Peschiera del Garda. It is set amidst breathtaking scenery surrounded by green mountains and colorful flowers which lends it a unique, tranquil atmosphere.
The town features a wonderful lakeside promenade offering beautiful views of the water and the town itself; there are plenty of benches along the way where you can take a short rest.
Riva del Garda is also an excellent stopover on the way to Lake Tenno, one of the most beautiful lakes in the region. If you are planning a trip around Lake Garda, it is certainly worth setting aside time to visit this small town, admire its beauty, and enjoy the special atmosphere it offers.
Limone
Limona lives up to its name; wherever you turn, you’ll see lemons on shop signs and among the products for sale. The lemon appears not just as an ingredient but also as a design element that adds color and interest; there’s even lemon-flavored ice cream served inside a lemon...
The town features a charming pedestrian street and a very long promenade along the lake.
💡 Note: The town is a popular tourist destination, so it is recommended to arrive early. The most convenient place to park is the lot at the lower end of town, near the pedestrian street; otherwise, you’ll face some challenging uphill and downhill walks.
Sirmione
Sirmione, a picturesque town situated on the shores of Lake Garda, is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful and impressive towns in Italy. Sirmione’s famous landmark, Scaligero Castle, lends a unique charm to the area. Built in the 13th century, the castle rises proudly above the lake's clear waters, offering breathtaking views.
Beyond the castle, Sirmione features enchanting narrow alleys that invite visitors to enjoy a pleasant stroll among historic houses and local shops. These alleys, winding along a narrow strip of land surrounded by water on all sides, possess a distinctive character and a romantic atmosphere. It is an ideal place to wander, soak up the local vibe, and discover the town's hidden gems.
💡 Please note: much like Limone, this town is very popular with tourists, so it is recommended to arrive early. There are several large parking lots at the town entrance; I highly recommend parking there and walking, thereby avoiding traffic jams.
Caruso restuarant
A restaurant with a stunning view of the lake; for some reason, its rating isn't great, but we found everything really delicious especially the pasta with eggplant and mozzarella.

Verona
The ancient center of Verona is one of the true gems of Italy, and it perfectly combines a rich history with spectacular architecture. When you approach the main square of the city, you can feel the special atmosphere that prevails there. The square, known as "Piazza della Erbe", is the center of city life, and the buildings that surround it reflect the diverse history of Verona.
In the center of the square, you can see the Verona Colosseum, or by its official name "Arena di Verona".
In the square, there are cafes and restaurants. It is very nice to sit and watch the people passing by, we were lucky enough to see an impressive holiday parade.
The city is adorned with small and beautiful alleys, which invite visitors to wander through them and discover hidden corners. Here you can find stores of well-known chains as well as small shops, traditional restaurants
Juliet's House is also located in one of the city's most beautiful neighborhoods, but it was packed to the brim with tourists, so we gave up the experience of seeing the famous balcony and experiencing the romantic atmosphere surrounded by love stories.
Bologna
Bologna, a city located in central Italy, is less impressive than other cities we visited during our trip. While it has its advantages, with cute and picturesque alleys that invite visitors to wander around, as well as a variety of shops, restaurants, and even a cute food market, there is a feeling that it does not offer the same charm or the same intensity as other cities in the country.
As for whether Bologna is worth dedicating a whole day to, this is a question that can depend on the personal preferences of each visitor. Some people will find the city charming and enjoy its unique atmosphere, while others may feel that it does not offer enough to justify a whole day.
In our case, we arrived in Bologna as part of a visit to the Ferrari Museum, which made the visit to the city much more worthwhile. The museum offers an amazing experience for any car enthusiast, with displays of classic cars, the history of the brand, and opportunities to watch real race cars. The visit to the museum, combined with wandering around the city, created a full and varied day that left us satisfied.
Venice
Venice is a very interesting and architecturally diverse city, with a rich history behind every building. It offers quite a few famous, beautiful and impressive places, with every corner of the city offering a different interesting building, each one telling a unique story about the city's culture and past. The architecture in Venice combines different styles, from Gothic to Renaissance, and every detail in the design of the buildings conveys a sense of magic and history. Among the famous buildings can be found St. Mark's Square, the magnificent Basilica and the Doge's Palace, all of which are excellent examples of the city's architectural art.
It is not recommended to arrive in Venice by car at all, we parked at the Mestre train station and from there we took a train to the city (there is a daily ticket for 25 euros, as of April 2025, and it also covers the water bus, for us it was worth it)
If you need accessibility, Venice is very problematic, it is completely inaccessible, lots of bridges with stairs that you have no choice but to cross.
💡 Line 2 of the sea bus is a circular line and passes many points of interest such as St. Mark's Square, the Rialto Bridge and more, I recommend taking a tour with it and enjoying the view and if you have a daily ticket you can get on and off as much as you want.
💡 Starting from April 2025, a tourist tax must be paid at the entrance to the city, the amount of the tax is 10 euros per person and if you pay at least 5 days in advance it is 5 euros. The tax for the time being is not collected for every day but for specific dates, it is recommended to check in advance on the website of Venice.
An hour-long cruise from Venice by water bus, a unique and impressive means of transportation, will take you to the island of Burano, also known by its various names, such as the "Island of Colors". Burano is a spectacular and colorful island, located a short distance from the famous city of Venice, and offers a different and authentic experience to its visitors. Every house on this island is painted in bright and striking colors, with each color carefully chosen, creating a pastoral and unique look. The island's residents adhere to the tradition of painting their houses, and the historical reason for this is that fishermen used the striking colors to identify their houses from afar, especially on foggy days.
This is a great place to escape the hustle and bustle of Venice, as the island offers a calm and peaceful atmosphere, narrow and quiet streets, and friendly residents who welcome visitors warmly. In addition, you can wander through the local shops offering handicrafts, famous Burano lace, and glassworks (although they are more typical of the other island of Murano, but you can still find them) and unique souvenirs from which you can bring home sweet memories of your visit.
Sigurta Gardens
The Botanical Gardens are a spectacular and well-kept place, offering visitors a unique experience of nature and beauty. The garden is spread over a large area, allowing visitors to admire a wide variety of plants, flowers and trees, each of which has been carefully selected to create an aesthetic and relaxing experience.
One of the most convenient and fun ways to tour the gardens is by golf cart. Renting such a vehicle allows visitors to easily move between the winding paths of the garden, and enjoy the magnificent scenery without getting tired. There is a specific route that is accompanied by detailed explanations about the plants and the area, which adds added value to the experience.
The golf cart tour takes about three hours, but it can also be shortened if desired. Usually, with a few stops, the tour can be completed in an hour and a half. If you choose to go on a walking tour, it is important to know that the distance will be much longer, which requires more time and effort.
Beyond the diverse vegetation, the park also offers encounters with cute deer, which add to the magical experience of the visit.
Ferrari Museum
The museum presents the development of the famous Ferrari brand, which is considered one of the most recognizable symbols in the automotive world. The museum offers visitors a unique experience, combining history, technology and design, and allows them to understand the fascinating process that the brand has undergone since its founding until today.
Among the models on display in the museum, you can find iconic cars from different periods, each of which tells a unique story about the history of Ferrari. From the beginning with the 125 S, Ferrari's first car, to the most advanced and innovative models of today, the museum offers a broad overview of the brand's technological and design evolution.
The museum itself is designed in a very impressive way, with open and bright spaces, allowing visitors to get close to the models and see them from all angles. The modern and innovative design of the museum reflects the spirit of Ferrari, with clean and impressive lines, which emphasize the beauty and power of the cars.
The museum not only displays the cars, but also offers a multi-sensory experience, with technological interactions that allow visitors to feel the speed and excitement of driving a Ferrari. There are interactive stations that allow visitors to experience driving simulations, understand the advanced technologies embedded in the cars, and learn about the engineering behind each model.
Shopping
Italy is a paradise for fashion lovers. In each of the big cities you can find all the chains on the city streets or in the malls, including the favorite chains of girls like Brandy Melville, Subdued and Sephora. Here I chose to mention two relatively convenient ones. Although they don't have all the facilities, one is cheaper and the other is on the way to the airport in Milan.
Mantova village
An excellent outlet center, with familiar and relatively popular brands (not only luxury brands) definitely worth a stop on the way back from Bologna / Ferrari
IL Centro
Our flight departed from Milan, and since everything was packed with tourists, we preferred to leave relatively early for the airport and be close to it. The IL Centro mall is a good option to pass the time as it has over 200 stores and is about half an hour from Malpensa and really close to Linate if you're flying from there.
Gelato
You said Italy, you said gelato, any gelato you choose will be great, but we came across the Venchi chain that kept having long lines around it and of course we gave it up, but the next time we passed near closing and the branch was deserted, indeed explains the long lines, excellent gelato is definitely the best we encountered on the trip
🌟 Golden recommendations from the trip:
🚗 Don't be afraid of the toll roads: The road infrastructure in northern Italy and the lake region is very convenient. My tip is not to skimp on the toll roads – they are excellently maintained, wide, include convenient stopping points for refreshment, and connect in an excellent and fast way most of the main sites.
📍 Peschiera del Garda is the perfect location for accommodation:
The choice to stay in the town of Peschiera del Garda turned out to be a real bingo and a perfect base for star trips in the area. The town itself is beautiful, sitting right on the lake with canals in a gorgeous blue-green hue, and offers plenty of cafes, restaurants and parking options (including free parking!).
🛣️ Peschiera's secret transportation advantage: Beyond its beauty, Peschiera sits right on the A4 motorway. This fact is a lifesaver on a trip: access from it to anywhere in the region is extremely fast, allowing you to cut through long traffic jams and not waste precious hours on the narrow roads that surround the lake.
⏰ Adjusting expectations for peak seasons and holidays: On my trip, we fell on Italian Liberation Day (April 25) and at the same time on a holiday period for tourists from the Netherlands. The result: heavy traffic at every destination, and endless lines for every successful restaurant or gelateria (ice cream parlor). My tip? Plan your arrival times wisely, take a deep breath, and don't let the lines ruin it for you - even when it's busy, the place is simply magical and you have a lot of fun there!
Ultimately, Lake Garda is one of those places that you simply can't help but fall in love with. The combination of clear water, picturesque alleys, and delicious Italian food creates a magic that is hard to explain in words—you just have to be there to understand.
