There are regions in the United States that are easy to fall in love with at first sight, and New England is undoubtedly one of them. It is an incredibly green region dotted with bays, lakes, and rivers and boasting an endless coastline that blends magnificent nature with small towns that look like something out of a postcard.
Most travelers know New England for its famous autumn foliage, when the forests are painted in breathtaking shades of red, orange, and gold. Yet, the region is equally beautiful in spring and summer, featuring blue skies, colorful blooms, and nature awakening after the long winter.
Boston is the most convenient starting point for a trip to the region. It is served by most airlines including direct flights from Israel and serves as an excellent base for day trips to the surrounding towns and natural sites.
Driving in New England is particularly pleasant. The roads are wide and well-maintained, drivers are courteous, and navigating is relatively simple. It is important to note, however, that some roads are toll roads; therefore, it is recommended to verify with the rental company that the vehicle is equipped with the appropriate toll pass. In most cases, the charge will appear after the vehicle is returned.
🗺️ Trip Profile: New England in Spring 🌸
🚗Route nature: A relaxed stay put road trip (departing from and returning to Boston for nearby destinations; staying in the Cape Cod area is not mandatory but is highly recommended).
⏱️Recommended duration: 7–10 days
⛅ Weather in May: True spring! Nature is waking up; everything is green and in bloom. The days are pleasant for walking, but it is recommended to dress in layers, as there are both very hot days and cool, rainy ones.
🎒 What’s the best thing about spring? Enjoying all the region's beauty the towns, beaches, and blossoms without the crazy tourist crowds of summer or the autumn foliage season.
🛍️ Tax-free shopping spree:
In Massachusetts: There is no sales tax on clothing and footwear (up to a value of $175 per item).
In Maine, there is no sales tax at all on clothing!
For this visit, I chose to focus on charming towns and day trips within about two hours of Boston a perfect blend of scenery, history, and local atmosphere.
What you'll find in this post:

Boston and the surrounding area
Boston - a big city with a pleasant pace
Boston brilliantly combines the advantages of a major city with an atmosphere that is calmer and more relaxed than that of New York or Los Angeles.
Here, you will find excellent museums, theaters, a wide variety of restaurants, and shopping districts featuring both international chains and local boutiques all within relatively convenient, manageable distances.
While the subway system the famous "T" may not be the most modern in the United States, it is efficient and provides access to most major attractions. Payment is easily handled via mobile phone or credit card, with no need for a dedicated app.
💡If you are traveling by car, it is recommended to park at one of the Park & Ride lots
outside the city center and continue using public transport. I chose the Woodland lot,
which offers hundreds of covered parking spaces at a very affordable all-day rate.
The city's two "green lungs" are Boston Common and the Boston Public Garden, which are located right next to each other. Of the two, I particularly loved the Public Garden, with its well-tended paths, charming seating areas, and a small lake where the famous swan boats glide.
Castle Island
A magical seaside promenade, far removed from the bustle of the city center.
The circular walking path runs along the water's edge, offering magnificent views of the Boston skyline, the harbor, and the ocean. It is the perfect spot for a leisurely stroll, a run, or even a picnic by the sea.
Thanks to its proximity to Logan Airport, visitors can also enjoy a nearly continuous spectacle of planes taking off and landing right over the water an especially delightful experience for aviation enthusiasts and children alike.
Levain bakery
On Newbury Street, you’ll find the Boston location of Levain Bakery, famous for its chocolate chip cookies; each cookie is packed with plenty of chocolate a real treat (and definitely enough for more than one person).
Larz Anderson Auto Museum
If you are a car enthusiast or simply appreciate unique placesit is worth stopping at the Larz Anderson Auto Museum.
The museum is housed in a beautiful historic estate surrounded by lawns and gardens. Inside, a private collection of vintage and unique automobiles tells the story of the evolution of the car over the years.
It is a relatively small museum, so you don't need to spend hours there, but it certainly makes for a pleasant and interesting stop. Among the exhibits, you will find some extraordinary vehicles, including a vintage car fitted with... a toilet an amusing feature that draws quite a bit of attention.
Connecticut and Rhode Island
Mystic - The Town That Became a Cinematic Legend
About a two-hour drive south of Boston, lies Mystic a charming small coastal town made famous by the movie "Mystic Pizza", which helped launch Julia Roberts' career.
The town itself is small and delightful for a short stroll. Its main street is lined with local shops, cafes, and galleries, and its most famous attraction is the drawbridge that allows large vessels to pass through.
Of course, I didn't skip a visit to the original pizzeria where the movie was filmed. The place is filled with photos, memorabilia, and posters from that era. The atmosphere is great, even if the pizza itself didn't quite live up to expectations.
Stonington - The Surprise of the Day
Just a few minutes from Mystic lies Stonington, a small, peaceful fishing village that, in my opinion, is even more beautiful than Mystic itself.
The streets are quiet, the houses are impeccably maintained, and the harbor is particularly picturesque; a small lighthouse stands at the edge of the village, adding a great deal of charm to the setting. It is the perfect stop for a leisurely one-hour stroll.
Newport - Oceanfront Estates
If you have always dreamed of getting a glimpse into the world of America’s wealthy, aristocratic families, Newport is a destination not to be missed.
Spectacular, sprawling mansions built in the late 19th century by the wealthiest families in the United States dot the coastline. Many of them are open to visitors and surrounded by exquisitely manicured gardens.
The most impressive of them all is undoubtedly The Breakers a vast, magnificent mansion built for the Vanderbilt family. Even if you choose to skip the interior tour, the gardens and the surrounding views make the visit well worth it.
The estate is situated along one of the area's most beautiful walking paths called the Cliff Walk, a spectacular trail that runs along the ocean-facing cliffs, offering wonderful views of the sea and the mansions.
Another estate I enjoyed visiting for its unique gardens is Green Animals Topiary Garden, featuring shrubs and hedges shaped like various animals a place that both children and adults will enjoy.
Pastoral nature north of Boston
New England Botanic Garden
Located about an hour and a half from Boston, amidst peaceful, green forests, lies the New England Botanic Garden.
It is the perfect place to take a break from the cities and highways. You can stroll along forest paths, enjoy manicured gardens and impressive plant collections, or simply sit back, take in the view, and soak up the tranquility. A wonderful destination for nature lovers and photography enthusiasts alike.
Rockport – A Seaside Postcard
Located about an hour's drive north of Boston is Rockport, one of the most beautiful towns I have visited in the area.
The small harbor, colorful wooden houses, boutiques, and local galleries create the atmosphere of a classic New England fishing village.
Seafood lovers will find excellent restaurants here, and if you are lucky, you might even spot whales off the coast.
Gloucester
Just about twenty minutes from Rockport lies Gloucester, another harbor town with an artistic character.
The town is home to a long-established artists' colony (unfortunately, it was closed when I visited), the drive to the local lighthouse takes you past impressive estates, manicured gardens, and marinas filled with yachts, a journey that is an attraction in itself.
Cape Cod and the Islands
Cape Cod – Beaches, Islands, and a Holiday Vibe
Cape Cod is one of the most beautiful regions in New England, and in my opinion, it certainly deserves more than just a day trip.
I chose to stay in the town of Hyannis, which served as an excellent base for exploring the area. It offers restaurants, shops, supermarkets, and fast ferries to nearby islands, successfully combining urban convenience with a relaxed vacation atmosphere.
There is an arts and crafts fair in town on weekends; unfortunately, I arrived mid-week and missed it, but the artists' stalls look truly charming and inviting.
The hotel where I stayed, Hyannis Travel Inn, was very simple but in an excellent location a 15-minute walk from the fast ferries to Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard, and just two minutes from Main Street, which offers a wide range of restaurants and shops
There is an excellent and charming Mexican restaurant near the hotel called Anejo Mexican Bistro.
Eastham Salt Pond
A stunning stop along the way is the Eastham Salt Pond; the postcard-perfect scenery definitely makes a quick stop worthwhile.
Provincetown
At the tip of the peninsula lies Provincetown, a vibrant, colorful town with a unique character.
Its main street, Commercial Street, is lined with galleries, boutiques, cafés, and restaurants, and the open, friendly atmosphere makes it one of the most interesting places on Cape Cod.
💡There is a convenient parking lot that costs about $3 per hour Grace Hall Parking Lot and is located in Prince St &, Bradford St, Provincetown, MA 02657, United States
Nantucket
Nantucket is one of the most prestigious and famous islands in the United States a favorite summer destination for celebrities and businesspeople.
The main street is indeed charming, and the ocean views are magnificent, but personally, I felt that one exhausts the island's offerings quite quickly. If your time is limited, you might want to consider other destinations in the area.
The island has convenient public transportation that makes it easy to reach key sites.
I had heard about a lively, vibrant brewery on the island, so I decided to visit it. After a
roughly half-hour ride followed by a 15-minute walk through the woods, I arrived at the brewery only to be disappointed to find a children's puppet show taking place...
Martha's Vineyard - The highlight of the trip
If there is one place I would recommend not skipping, it is Martha's Vineyard.
The island is larger, more diverse, and in my opinion more beautiful than Nantucket. It combines picturesque towns, wonderful beaches, historic homes, and scenery you never tire of photographing.
Edgartown
An elegant, well-kept town with white Victorian-style houses, orderly streets, and an atmosphere that is upscale yet pleasant.
Vineyard Haven
A more colorful and vibrant town, with a wide variety of shops, galleries, and restaurants.

Oak Bluffs
My absolute favorite.
It is a colorful, charming town whose main attraction is the "Gingerbread Cottages" neighborhood a collection of small, colorful houses that look like something out of a fairy tale. Each house is unique, yet together they create a distinctive and delightful scene.
An impressive church stands in the center of the neighborhood, and along the waterfront, you will find a pleasant promenade featuring restaurants and cafés overlooking the sea.
And how could we do without a few turkeys wandering the streets undisturbed?

Shopping in New England – Many Brands, Lower Taxes
If you plan to leave some room in your suitcase, New England is also an excellent destination for shopping.
Massachusetts has no sales tax on clothing and footwear, while Maine has no sales tax at all a significant advantage that makes prices particularly attractive. Additionally, the region is home to numerous excellent outlet malls where you can find substantial discounts year-round.
Wrentham Village Premium Outlets
This is one of the largest and most successful outlet malls in the Boston area.
You will find dozens of leading brands here, large stores with extensive inventory, and often additional deals on top of the already discounted outlet prices. If you are planning a serious day of shopping, this is the place to start.
Assembly Row
If you don’t have time to travel far, Assembly Row is an excellent option.
Located just a short distance from downtown Boston and the airport, the complex features outlet stores from well-known brands alongside various restaurants and cafés. While the stores may be smaller than those at Wrentham, you can still find plenty of great deals here.
Another advantage is the parking: the first three hours are free and its a coverd garage.
Families with children will also appreciate the LEGO Discovery Center a fun, interactive attraction that makes it easy to combine a day of shopping with activities for the kids.
If you’re hungry, the complex offers a variety of restaurants. My personal favorite a chain found throughout the US is Outback Steakhouse, a fantastic Australian-style restaurant. You can find excellent steaks here, and for fans of the "Bloomin' Onion," theirs is outstanding. If you visit during the week at lunchtime, you can get a business lunch special featuring a 6oz (approx. 170g) steak with a side dish for $15.

💡A quick tip for New Balance enthusiasts 👟
If you love the New Balance brand, don't miss a visit to the factory store in the Boston area.
Since the company is headquartered in Massachusetts, you can often find new models there at excellent prices. During my visit, I came across shoes selling for around 700 NIS in Israel priced at just $50.
Of course, the inventory changes throughout the year, but if you’re in the area anyway, it’s definitely worth stopping by to take a look.
To wrap it up, New England is the kind of destination that is hard to put into words. It may not offer New York’s skyscrapers or Florida’s massive attractions, but the very combination of spectacular nature, picturesque towns, beautiful beaches, and a relaxed atmosphere makes it one of the most unique regions in the United States. Anyone looking for a trip at a leisurely pace rich in scenery and local charm will quickly fall in love with it.
